Joe makes final of community award

Well-known photographer and Lifford native Joe Boland has made it through to the final phase of the Calor Community Champion 2012, as part of the final six.

Joe, a scout leader for over 20 years topped the public vote on the Calor Ireland Facebook page with over 4,000 votes. He received significant support from across the North West for his work with the scouts at local, provincial and national level; in training thousands of scout leaders in his local community over many years.

Now, Joe and his fellow finalists will now go forward to the Judging Panel led by TV and radio personality, Hector Ó hEochagáin, and including legendary GAA and sports broadcaster, Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh and Jennifer Fagan from Calor. The inaugural Calor Community Champion 2012 will be announced on September 4th.

Joe says he is delighted and surprised to not only progress but to also top the poll.

“Obviously I am very pleased.

“It’s humbling even to have been nominated let alone top the vote.

“Everyone who was nominated is a very worthy contender and any of the finalists will be worthy winners.”

Joe says primarily he is delighted his recognition gives the Scouts movement a higher profile.

In the past he has taken up roles on County, Provincial and National Committees but what he loves most is organising activities for scouts, including camps and challenge days.
