Jobs boost confirmed for Donegal Town

75 new jobs have been confirmed for Abbott in Donegal Town.

In a rare but very welcome jobs announcement, Tnaiste Mary Coughlan described the decision by the pharmaceutical giant to increase its workforce at Abbott from 80 to 155 as a "vote of confidence" in the people of Donegal south west.

Interestingly at a time when the US company is rationalising some of its many global operations, the Tnaiste said that she had been aware of this and had dealt directly with Abbott in California on two occasions to secure the jobs.

Ms Coughlan said she accepted that 155 jobs at Abbott was a long way

from the 550 jobs at one time available at the former Hospira plant at the same location, but she added:

"No one takes from that but we have to sustain Abbott in Donegal and it is the people in Donegal who did the work to ensure they not only sustained Abbott's 80 jobs but have added 75 and that's the key, that has to be welcomed."

News of the new jobs was relayed to staff at Abbott in Donegal Town on Friday last but was confirmed just yesterday by the Tnaiste speaking to this newsaper in Bundoran.
