Italy may be Shay’s final international game
Shay Given, says he has a decision to make on his future.
Ireland’s final game in Euro 2012 against Italy may well be Donegal man Shay Given’s final game in an Irish shirt.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the bitter disappointment of the Republic’s heavy defeat to Spain, Given admitted that he knew he had a decision to make, but he would hold off on it whilst he was hurting:
“I think it might be time to step aside and let somebody else come into the side. It’s all a bit raw at the moment because we’ve lost an important game but at some point I’m going to have to make a decision.”
Should the Rosgier man decide to hang up his gloves, it will bring down the curtain on a glittering career - 125 caps and many years with some of the top clubs in Scotland and in England.
He said he will take a break and a holiday after the championships and will talk to his family about his future.
At 36 some would suggest he could quite reasonably continue on and play a key role for Ireland as they bid to make the World Cup final stages, but at the moment the Lifford man is ruling nothing in or out.
Speaking on the Late Late Show prior to the Euro Championships, Given left the door open on what plans he had in mind for his own future.
When he reflects on the championship, he may well decide to hang in and continue.
