Gardaí in Ballyshannon have confirmed that an investigation is underway after a trailer containing 33,000 litres of diesel sludge was found abandoned in Ballintra.

Supt. Leo McGinn said gardaí were notified last Saturday night that a trailer had been left near a quarry at Ballymagroarty, Ballintra.

“At first it was thought that it contained laundered diesel but it was found to contain 33,000 litres of sludge, or wash, that is a by-product of laundering diesel,” he told the Donegal Democrat.

“Abandoning a container holding that amount of sludge creates a very considerable waste management risk,” Supt. McGinn continued. “If it had started to seep into the ground, it would have made for a serious environmental hazard.”

A garda Scenes of Crime team investigated the site of the find and enquiries are underway to determine who was responsible for abandoning the container.

Gardaí also alerted Donegal County Council and Customs & Excise to their find and they are carrying out their own investigations.

The contained has been removed to safe storage in Ballybofey.

If anyone has any information that they think might help the investigation, they are asked to contact gardaí in Ballyshannon on 071 985 8530.
