Interpol investigating Donegal woman’s death
The international police agency Interpol has been brought in to investigate the death of a Donegal aid worker who died in Ethiopia seven years ago.
Joyce Campbell, from Meenmore, Dungloe, died when she was involved in a car accident.
An inquest into Ms Campbell’s death at Letterkenny Coroner’s Court on Tuesday was adjourned after coroner John Cannon said there have been difficulties securing information from Ethiopian police.
“They do not seem to be getting great hope from the police in Ethiopia,” he said.
He said gardaí have been in touch with Interpol who have taken over the case.
Ms Campbell had just celebrated her 25th birthday when she died while working for the Vincentian May Missioners. She had been in Ethiopia for three weeks as part of a four-month stay. Two Irishmen in the car were also injured in the accident which happened in Welyta, about nine hours north of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on August 8th, 2005.
Joyce was a graduate of Development, Health and Disaster Management and she also had a Masters in Humanitarian Assistance.
The inquest was adjourned until September 28th.
