Oireachtas members and county councillors from Donegal should be meeting regularly with members of other local authorities to help press the need for the upgrade of the road from Derry to Dublin, members of Donegal County Council have been told.

A call has also been made for the council to have a presence at the judicial review into A5 Derry to Aughnacloy upgrade which is to be heard later this month.

Fianna Fáil councillor Seamus Ó Domhnaill made the call for the establishment of a committee made up of the local authorities on both sides of the border that would benefit from the A5 upgrade.

He said there had been a proposal before Monaghan County Council to remove the N2 connector upgrade from the county development plan. “If this had happened, it would have been a disaster for Donegal County Council and the north west in general”, he said. “While it did not happen, it could have happened without Donegal County Council knowing about it.”

More than 2,000 objections were made to the A5 dual-carriage way project prompting an oral hearing last year. The judicial review into the A5 follows the granting of planning permission for the go-ahead for the first two sections of the A5. However, a decision on the final stretch from Ballygawley to Aughnacloy has been postponed.

Cllr. Ó Domhnaill said there was a connection between the high unemployment rates in Donegal and the fact the north west is the only part of the country without a motor way.
