After months of speculation on the future of Town Councils, well placed sources within Fine Gael have told this newspaper that a formal announcement signalling their demise will be made this week in Dail Eireann.

It is expected that the Minister for Environment, Phil Hogan TD, will make the announcement within the next few days and annouce details of the new structure.

The Fine Gael source said, “Full details have not as yet been confirmed but our understanding is that the existing Town Councils will be replaced by ‘Borough Councils’ similar to the Scottish model with representatives being elected at the next local election when the existing term expires.

“Effectively this means for example that in South Donegal one body could represent an area stretching from Bundoran to Glenties - in reality it would be similar to the electoral area councils but with more elected representatives.”
