Help raise €450,000 this Alzheimer’s Tea Day in order to maintain vital services run by The Alzheimer Society of Ireland throughout the country.

RTE’s Pat Kenny and The Alzheimer Society of Ireland are calling on people all over Ireland to become involved in the 19th Annual Tea Day campaign being held on Thursday 9th May 2013.

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland needs to recruit over 1500 hosts for Tea Day this year in order to reach the target of €450,000 needed to continue to provide important services to families in Ireland living with Alzheimer’s. All money raised locally from Tea Day, will be invested in local services.

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland is the leading dementia specific service provider in Ireland and last year provided over 1 million hours of community care to people living with dementia. It has warned that it is struggling to cope with an increasing demand for its services so support for the annual Tea Day fundraising campaign is more important than ever.

Dementia affects 41,700 people in Ireland and nearly 9% of these people have early onset dementia which means they are under 65 years of age. There is an estimated 50,000 family carers looking after a loved one with at least one symptom of dementia. Due to an ageing population the number of people with dementia is expected to reach 147,000 by 2041.

“Many family carers are looking after their loved ones 24 hours per day, the services provided by The Alzheimer Society of Ireland help to ensure that both carers and people with dementia are supported. These services are vital”, says Pat Kenny at the launch of Tea Day 2013.

The RTE presenter, whose late mother Connie lived with Alzheimer’s disease for 14 years, has been a strong supporter of the Alzheimer Society in recent years. He knows the difference the Alzheimer Society’s services can make to families, carers and people living with dementia.
