Haiti waterbus update

by Sue Doherty

The boat may have returned to the quay, but the monies are still flowing in from the Donegal Town waterbus initiative for Haiti.

On Monday, a day after the waterbus held a special afternoon cruise to raise funds for the relief effort, organisers estimated the total would be around €5,000.

Much to their delight however, the tide of donations is still running in their direction. Thanks to a very substantial gift from the Donegal Vintage and Classic Car Club, presented by John Feeney, and other contributions, the sum collected so far now stands at €7,350.

All proceeds are going to help survivors of the earthquake, as well as orphaned and abandoned children with special needs in Haiti. Liz Lawne, who has already spent time working there with Gena Heraty will return this summer for a two year stint.

Liz raised a staggering 1,750 packing bags at SuperValu last Saturday. That money is being used to buy supplies which will be sent out this week as part of a consignment of emergency aid.

Marty McGarrigle, of Donegal Town Waterbus says they are “delighted to being able to support this very worthy cause”. He adds: “We only had a week to organise the Waterbus event, so we weren’t able to get around to all the businesses, but we’re still welcoming donations. We’re also planning another outing in June, just before Liz leaves for Haiti.”

Donations to Liz Lawne Haiti Fund can be left with John Feeley c/o Central Hotel or Marty McGarrigle, c/o McGarrigle Framing, Quay Street, Donegal Town.
