Gweebarra group to host public meeting

The Gweebarra Conservation Group is holding a public meeting next weekend on a number of environmental issues, including the planned ESB/Eirgrid high-power line through rural Donegal, mining in the area, industrial wind farms and litter.

The meeting is set for 4 pm on Saturday, June 12, at Elliott's Lounge in Leitirmacaward.

A spokesperson for the group said that the refusal of Eamon Ryan, minister for communications, energy and natural resources, to meet with the group prompted the meeting. Minister Ryan granted a prospecting license to Mytillus Mining Ltd. earlier this year that would affect dozens of townlands in the Gweebarra area, according to a statement from the local conservation group.

A representative of the group Alternatives to Pylons (ATP) will address the meeting. ATP is campaigning against the planned ESB/Eirgrid high-power line that is set to run across 102 kilometres of rural Donegal.

The Gweebara Conservation group was formed to promote the preservation of the unique area landscape, a spokesperson said. She said Gweebarra and surrounding townlands contain many legally protected species and habitats and is home to a common seal population of about 500.
