Padraig MacLochlainn says what the people of Donegal need most of all is hope, hope that things will improve. Charlie McConalogue wants the government held to account in regard to its treatment of the most vulnerable while Joe McHugh says he hopes 2013 will be a year of steady progress towards recovery.

After one of the toughest years politically for any party Fine Gael’s McHugh said “I hope that 2013 will be a year of steady progress towards a recovery that will offer a future at home to the bright young Donegal people who are currently working in other countries. Skills and life experiences being picked up abroad will greatly enrich this country when the recovery comes.”

Deputy McConalogue said: “In the last budget we saw cuts to services such as home help and carers respite as well as severe pressure being put on health services when other options could have been taken instead. The vulnerable should not have been hit like this. We will be fighting to ensure that there is fairness.”

Deputy MacLochlainn commented that he had been struck by the irony that in the same week the massive launch for ‘The Gathering’ was taking place the scattering of tens of thousands of our citizens, mainly young people, was also occurring.

He commented: “I was forcibly struck while watching the celebrations to launch ‘The Gathering’ thousands of our young people were leaving, going back to Australia, Canada or whatever. Dublin airport had two of the busiest days in its history this week.”

Their comments come against a background of increasing concerns about the level of emigration.

Inishowen soccer league secretary Diarmuid O’Brien claims all sports have been badly affected by the continual exodus of young people to the likes of the USA, England and Australia in particular.
