Gardaí seek witnesses to Ballyshannon fatal hit and run

Gardaí in Ballyshannon have renewed their appeal for witnesses to a fatal collision on the N15 near Ballyshannon last Saturday.
Eunan McDevitt, a 47-year-old father of two and former Army chef, was discovered lying on the carriageway of the N15 at Parkhill at around 12.40am on Saturday morning.
Gardaí believe he was struck by a passing vehicle.
Supt. Leo McGinn renewed their appeal for witnesses.
He said: “An incident room has been set up in Ballyshannon. All available resources that would be used in the investigation of such events have been deployed in this case.
“There’s been a very good response. We’ve made considerable progress but we still have a bit to go. However, we are going in the right direction, I believe.
“Parkhill is on the main Donegal town to Ballyshannon road, about 1km north of Ballyshannon, just before the Coolcholly roundabout.
“The window I’m,speaking about is between about midnight on Friday to 12.35am on the Saturday, about 35 minutes. The incident was notified to us about 25 minutes to 1 on Saturday, so it happened some minutes before that, I’m sure.
“So, people who travelled that road, people who may have seen something, people who accompanied other drivers as passengers, if you haven’t already come forward, we’d like to hear from you, either through the Garda Confidential Line or at any garda station. The Confidential Line is 1800 666111.
“In my experience in investigations over the years, and I was involved in many of them, people in these circumstances, they often feel it. They feel a great weight on their heart and on their shoulders. I’ve seen, in very many cases, when they did come to the guards and when they did make the disclosure, when they did make a clean breast of it, so to speak, they felt much, much better.
“I’m appealing to that driver, be they young or old, male or female, whatever the case may be, to come here to Ballyshannon or to any garda station and help us establish what happened at Parkhill on Friday night/Saturday morning last.
“Or, indeed, if there is a parent out there, or a spouse, or somebody who knows something about it, maybe a passenger travelling in that car, if they know something, please come forward.
“Because I’m satisfied the driver knew he or she was involved in a traffic collision. So I would ask somebody who knows them, or has influence over the driver, come here with them, come here to meet it fair and square. I’ve no difficulty with meeting them with a family member, no difficulty with a pastor, no difficulty with a member of the legal profession, coming here in the company of somebody who wants to make a clean breast of it for all concerned, particularly for the family.
“I would say, also, it would be much, much better in the short term and, in the long term, for the driver of the car.
“We’ve made considerable progress but, at this stage, I’m not prepared to disclose what progress we’ve made, for operational reasons.
“Significant progress has been made and, again, it is much better for the driver to come and see us rather than waiting for us to come and see them, and knock on his or her door.”
