Gardaí investigate spate of break-ins in south Donegal

Gardaí in Ballyshannon and Donegal Town are investigating a series of break-ins that have taken place over the last week in south Donegal.
In all, seven thefts have been reported from homes and properties in Ballintra, Bundoran, Donegal Town, Laghey and Mountcharles.
Last Wednesday night/Thursday morning, a laptop and jewellery were taken during the burglary of a dwelling in Mountcharles. Garda Supt. Leo McGinn confirmed that some property has been recovered and it is expected that an individual will be brought before the courts in the near future in relation to this incident.
Last Friday around 10.30pm, two large windows were broken on a door to gain access to Magh Ene College in Bundoran. A young adult has been charged in relation to the incident. A number of break-ins occurred last Saturday.
A house at Glebe Crest in Donegal Town was ransacked between 3pm and 7pm while the occupants were away. A bedroom was searched and some jewellery was taken.
A house at Rathneeny, Laghey was broken into between 5.30pm and 7pm on Saturday while the owners were away. There was minor damage to the front door and a sum of money was taken. An intruder or intruders entered a house on Mountcharles’ Main Street by a rear window between 6.15pm and 7pm. A sum of cash was stolen and property damaged.
The occupants of a house in Main Street, Mountcharles returned home at 7.15pm and disturbed intruders, who made off with a small amount of cash and some property. The intruders had forced entry through a door at the rear of the house. Gardaí have viewed CCTV footage and believe a grey Volvo may have been involved. Some property has been recovered.
Finally, some time between 6pm on Monday and 6am on Tuesday a significant quantity of diesel was siphoned from the tank of a lorry in the Ballymagroarty area of Ballintra.
Supt. McGinn appealed to the public to be alert and to take preventative measures. “In some cases, houses have been broken into where doors have been left unsecured and the owners were out. So I would ask people to be that little bit more security conscious. Before you go out, check that your doors and windows are locked.
“Even when you are at home during daylight hours, it is advisable to keep all doors and windows locked. There have been many instances, in my experience, where someone has been working at the front of the house, for example, and a thief enters by the back door and is gone with something before anyone even realises that someone has been in the house.
“We’re also asking people to be vigilant and keep an eye out for anything that seems suspicious, such as a strange vehicle in the area. In cases like that, ring the guards, no matter how insignificant you think it might be.
“We’d much prefer be called out and not needed than not contacted.”
