Garda action will not impact on St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day parades in Donegal will not be affected by work-to-rule measures being taken by gardaí, the Garda Representative Association (GRA) has said.

New work-to-rule measures by gardaí in protest against government cutbacks were introduced last week and mean gardaí will not be putting themselves forward for voluntary overtime. The opposition to cutbacks has already seen members of the force stop using their own vehicles and laptops on duty.

St. Patrick’s Day is one of up to 15 days a year when gardaí can be ordered to work overtime and have rest days cancelled. Concerns had been expressed nationally that the new work-to-rule measures would impact on large events such as St. Patrick’s Day, which is associated with a high number of alcohol-related incidents. Many gardaí are reluctant to work the day because of the fear of being assaulted, one garda said, but working the day provides double-time pay and a day off in return.

The Donegal GRA representative, Marie McLaughlin, said: “It won’t interfere with St. Patrick’s Day. Members will be working as normal.”
