Kate McFadden: Deeply regretted is the death of Mrs. Kate McFadden, Cnoc Fola which occurred at Letterkenny General Hospital on Saturday, 22nd August. The deceased, who reached the grand age of 89 years, was affectionately known locally as Kate Chonaill Fheilimidh (ne McFadden). She was married to Hiuda Eoin Conchubhair McFadden, who was originally from Inis Oirthear. He predeceased her fourteen years ago. Kate, and her husband Hiuda and family, lived at a beautiful scenic spot close to the sea in Cnoc Fola. Kate was hired out in the Lagan Valley at the tender age of fourteen years, and she worked there until she was aged seventeen. She was also a very religious person and had requested her family that on her death she should be waked at home for one night and another night in the local church. Blessed with a great memory up to the very end, and although she did not receive much schooling, she was a very intelligent person. She could relate old stories, and she also was a lovely singer. Predeceased by her husband, Hiuda; sister, Annie Ferry; and two brothers, John and Charlie McFadden; she will be sorely missed by her family and especially by her grand-children. There was a very large and representative attendance at the removal of remains, the wake and funeral, a clear indication of the high esteem in which the deceased and her family are held. Her funeral took place on Monday week following concelebrated Requiem Mass in St. Colmcille Church, Cnoc Fola. The main celebrant was Fr. Donnchadh Baoill, C.C., Cnoc Fola and concelebrants were, Fr. Michael Sweeney, P.P., Gaoth Dobhair, and Fr. Sen Gallchir, P.P., Gortahork. The lessons were read by Michelle Nic Phidn (grand-daughter) and Aidan Gallchir, (grandson). The prayers were read by Marian Campbell, (niece), Martina Hannigan, (grand-niece) and Risn Nic Phidn, (grand- niece). The offertory gifts were brought to the altar by her daughter Sue and brothers, Martin, Owenie and Gerry. The soloist was Celia McFadden. Following the mass she was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery. She is survived by her daughter, Sue Gallagher, (Lunniagh); sons, Owenie McFadden, (Glassagh), Martin (Carrickcoyle) and Gerry, (Lower Keeldrum, Gortahork); three brothers, Feidhlimidh McFadden, (Cnoc Fola), Owen, (Cnoc Fola) and Christie, (Glasgow); in-laws; grandchildren; relatives and friends, to all of whom deep sympathy is extended.
