Further talks at nursing home

There are hopes that the deadline to find a new service provider at Cregg House nursing home in Sligo will be put back until January.

The Daughters of Wisdom, who have responsibilty for care at the home had said they intended to relinquish responsibilty on Thursday next, October 4th.

An emergency meeting was held between the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) and Impact and management on Friday and another meeting has been called for this Wednesday.

Both unions have concerns that staff have not been advised of who will be responsible foe the service after October 4th.

Cregg House is home to 214 service users and employs more than 300 people.

Impact spokesman in the north west, Ritchie Carrothers, said Friday’s meeting laid the ground for further discussion. “From a trade union point of view we believe it is incumbent on both sides, the Daughters of Wisdom and the HSE, to hammer out fair and equitable deal as quickly as possible because the longer this goes on the more worrying it is for service users, family and staff,” he told the DPP/DD.

Mr. Carrothers said the unions are in active discussions with the HSE and the Daughters of Wisdom about moving the deadline back to January.#

He said it is incumbent on all parties to do the right thing and reach an agreement.

“That gives us a small window of opportunity to try and ensure that we go to public tender to try and get anew service provider. It is a tight timescale but it is deliverable if everybody co-operates. I am hopeful that we can hammer out a deal that would allow the daughters to continue until January 31st.”

Last Friday’s meeting was called by Impact and the INMO who claim the Daughters of Wisdom, had “not advised staff of any plan which would ensure a safe and seamless transition of care for clients at Cregg House”.

In a statement released jointly last week Impact and the INMO said the situation at Cregg House now requires the input of the Minister for Health.
