A 26 year-old Donegal man died last night following a single vehicle road traffic collision near Stranorlar on a section of road where a number of fatal accidents have occurred before.

The fatal accident occurred at approximately 11p.m. at Treenamullin, Stranorlar. The road is close to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Stranorlar and there have been a number of fatal accidents on this stretch of road over the years.

Cllr Patrick McGowan told the Donegal Democrat: “It is a notorious stretch of road and there have been several fatal accidents and many other near misses on this section of road.

“A death at any time is very sad, but this is particularly sad occurring on Christmas Day. I extend my sympathy to the bereaved.

The male driver, who is from south Donegal, was fatally injured when his vehicle left the road and came to a stop in a field. He was removed by ambulance to Letterkenny General Hospital.

The road where the collision occurred was closed this, pending an examination by Garda forensic collision investigators but was re-opened to traffic circa 2pm today, St Stephen’s Day.

Gardaí at Ballybofey are continuing their investigation into the single vehicle accident.

This is the 7th death on Donegal’s roads in 2012.
