ESB and Knather residents make progress on fence issue at Ballyshannon
A residents group in Ballyshannon and the ESB have made progress in relation to issues at a local amenity at the Knather where ESB moves to erect high fencing prompted a protest yesterday by 25 local people.
During a frank exchange of views at the side of the road between residents and representatives of the ESB yesterday morning at Laputa jetty, one of a number of local beauty spots on Assaroe Lake, it was agreed that a meeting to iron out issues over access and the height of new fencing to be erected there would be held last night.
That one hour meeting last night between a KASRA delegation and ESB representatives appears to have made significant progress on some of the main issues concerning residents.
KASRA (Knather and Surrounding Areas Residents Association) has informed members today through their website that they have succeeded in restoring access to the slipway and have managed to get agreement from the ESB that no more 2 meter fencing will be erected without consultation with the residents group.
According tot heir website KASRA say: “Access to the slipway that had been cut off with the new fencing shall be restored via a pathway through the wooded area to the slipway. This path shall be determined (today) Friday, March 15th by a delegation of KASRA committee members and the ESB.
“No further work shall be done on the 6’ (2 meter) fence at the slipway without further consultation with KASRA. No additional fencing of this height shall be installed but requested that they continue work on the lower area of fencing and the development of the access path to the lake.”
KASRA’s website statement added: “The type of fencing shall remain as it is economical and durable.
“KASRA remain hopeful regarding the height of the 6’ (2 meter) fence at the slipway. We have requested that it be lowered to 4’ (1.2 meters). We also request that the fence leading to the waters edge be removed and if required replaced with large stones.”
The residents say that the ESB informed them at last night’s emergency meeting that Donegal County Council had made the request for the removal of a stone wall near the gate to the slipway for greater visibility and driver safety.
The residents say this will be addressed at a meeting of KASRA on March 20th.
