Errigal College healthy news

Errigal College is participating in the Healthy Schools Scheme which is funded and supported by the HSE. The College hopes to receive the award in May of this year and to that end the committee is organising a highlighting week in the school to promote healthy eating.

The committee is representative of all members of the school community with parents, staff and students represented.

As part of the Healthy Schools Week all students have been given a three day food diary to complete. It is hoped that by entering what students are eating and drinking for three days it will help them to be more aware of what they are eating in terms of healthy food. Questionnaires will also be completed by students during this week. Other events include the visit of a dietician and further work on the school garden which is being completed in conjunction with SCP and the Green School Committee.

During Arts Week several murals and the food pyramid were completed and are on display around the school and in the canteen. There will be an emphasis on cross curricular activities to highlight the importance of healthy eating drawing on subjects such as Art, HE, Science, PE, French, and Careers.

The committee is: Ms McGuinness, Ms Markham, Mr Molloy, Ms Raine, parent Clare Foody, canteen operator Nuala Higgins, students Hannah O Donnell, Christopher Cannon and Zyanda Shologu. Margaret Mc Garrigle from the HSE offers advice and support on an ongoing basis.

Ms McGuinness organised face painting for St Patrick’s Day on Tuesday last at the College. The money raised will go towards the Donegal Special Olympics Fund. Students were treated to a seasonal design using green face paint of course.

The Girls Active project held its annual Fete on Thursday 18 March at Gartan OEC. The project aims to improve the level of fitness among second level girls by organising physical activities which they enjoy. This year at Errigal College the girls participated in aerobics and hip hop dancing and a thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all the girls when a number of schools gathered at Gartan to celebrate the end of the project for this year. The 1st and 2nd year girls participated in team events, a night line and a trust game and were presented with certificates at the end of the day. Ms Cullen organises Girls Active at the College.

The Senior Boys GAA team had a good win over Finn Valley College this week. The win guarantees the team a place in the final match. Best for Errigal on the day were Conor Butler, Conor Mc Daid and Michael Doherty. Mr Gorman coaches the team.

2nd years have been participating in an Understanding Diversity Programme as part of Junior Achievement. Noreen Gallagher from Pacificare and Patricia Friel from Junior Achievement have delivered several workshops on the theme of respecting diversity in all its forms. Ms Russell Kelly organised the programme.

The College will host the Quiz Night at Arena7 on Wednesday 14 April. Further details to follow.
