Earthquake appeal success for St. Eunan's College

By Conor McBrearty

Local school, St Eunan’s College raised over 6,000 euro in less than two hours for Donegal women Gena Heraty who is working in an orphanage in Haiti. The school raised this money through a gate collection and student council members collecting money. This was a fantastic achievement for this local school.

The school will now hand over the cheque to Gena’s sibling michael and it will go towards Gina aiding the children of her orphanage.

St. Eunan’s College school have chosen to give their donation to Gena to aid children in the local orphanage in Haiti as they feel it is a very worthwhile donation and they feel it will be used well if given to Gena.

The Democrat spoke to vice principal in St. Eunan’s College Rena O’ Herlihy and she described the efforts by the staff and students as “phenomenal”.

She added: “It just shows what can be done in a short space of time, the boys were absolutely fantastic and the event was spearheaded by three of our teachers. We read the article about Gena in the Donegal Democrat and her 16 years working with orphans and we wanted to pick her to give the money to. Shortly we will give the donation to give her brother Michael in Killybegs for it to be sent to help the people in Haiti.”

Gena is an aid worker who has been based in Haiti for the last 16 years. Gena’s brother spoke to the Democrat and told the Democrat: “My heart aches for haiti and the haitian people. My heart aches for those I have loved and lost. Some people blame god or wonder if he is even here. I do not blame god nor do i doubt his existence. My mind is logical.

“This was a natural disaster and it wreaked so much havoc because Haiti was in a mess long before the earthquake”.Michael also spoke to us and told us that Gena fears for some of the people, she said “people are in tents all over the place-makeshift ones . Are they getting help? I worry for some-who will find them where they are, off the beaten path.”

Overall it was a fantastic achievement by the whole school and all parents who contributed to the cause and a big congratulations to all involved is expressed by Rena O Herlihy.
