Niamh Kelly, a 16-year-old girl from Dungloe, is running a successful bakery business from her home.

The company, called OvenGlove Bakery, specialises in making personalised cakes and has been in business for over a year now.

Niamh specialises in making personalised cakes and she has featured some extraordinary designs - 3D Barbie cakes, Tinkerbell cakes, Football Jersey cakes and, of course, wedding cakes.

“I don’t have a selction of cakes to choose from, I just make whatever people ask for to the best of my ability”, Niamh said.

She has baked for years and she officially started her bakery business in October 2010 when she entered a competition run by NFTE (Network For Teaching Entrepreneurship). She found out about it through her involvement with the Rosses Neighbourhood Youth Programme and Foróige.

Niamh had competed in mini-competitions before. In the NFTE event, she got as far as representing her county in the All-Ireland finals where she placed second.

Ever since, she has gone from strength to strength, making around three cakes a week on average.

“Although it can be stressful at times in the kitchen, it’s definitely worth it. I love it”, Niamh said.

She has a facebook page to showcase her cakes, which are of a very high standard.

Niamh wants to be a professional chef when she’s older and she is going on to do work experience with Neven McGuire in the Black Lion in March.

She is a rising star with a very promising future!
