Double success for Tipperary Tadhg!
For Letterkenny Town Mayor, Tadhg Culbert, last weekend was a winning one in every sense. First on Saturday he got the news that he had shared in the Letterkenny Athletic Club Lotto jackpot of €640 and then, on Sunday, he was in Croke Park to watch his beloved Tipperary claim All-Ireland honours.
"You could say I had a lotto luck," he laughed. Though luck had nothing to do with his native Tipp's lifting of the Liam McCarthy Cup after putting an end to Kilkenny's five-in-a-row pursuit.
"The atmosphere was unbelievable. It was a magnificent game and one we deserved to win," said Tadhg.
Born and bred in Limerick Junction, he has been a lifelong supporter of the Tipperary hurling team and his move to Donegal failed to dampen that enthusiasm over the years. He actually won a Championship with Burt hurlers and turned out for the county on a number of occasions. "As they say at home, I played a bit."
But watching the Tipp men gives him his biggest thrill. "I put money on them on 28th December to win the All-Ireland this year though the odds were only 2/1 at the time.
"I travelled to Cork to watch them in the first round of the Munster Championships and though we were hammered by ten points, I still thought they would go on and do it this year."
His attendance at the quarter-final and semi-final stages confirmed his fanaticism and there was no way he was going to miss Sunday's showdown in Dublin. "I was more confident this year than last and even when Kilkenny closed the gap, I wasn't too fearful. The boys didn't buckle under the pressure, " said Tadhg who travelled to the game in the company of Noel Cassidy, John Harron and Paddy Mullen.
"I was sitting a few rows behind the President and the Taoiseach, looking down on Eoin Kelly holding up the cup. It was brilliant."
Not the Mayor's only success over the weekend - his spending money for the big day in Croker supplemented with his share of the proceedings from the Letterkenny A.C. lotto. "I shared the €640 with Garvan McCloskey. It was a good weekend all right."
And he's hoping for more of the same next Saturday when he travels to Semple Stadium for the All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Final which pairs Tipperary with Galway. "I'll be there and hopefully there'll be more silverware for us at the end of it.
"There's no game in the world like hurling and Sunday proved it," insisted Tadhg.
