Donegal tops countrywide unemployment list in 2006 and 2011

Donegal’s unemployment rate was the highest in the country in 2006 and 2011, and more than doubled during that time, according to an analysis of census figures presented at the September meeting of the Letterkenny Electoral Area committee.

Donegal recorded an unemployment rate of 12.9 percent in 2006 and 26.2 percent in 2011, both leading the table of county-by-county unemployment. In 2006, County Louth was ranked second, with an unemployment rate of 11.1 percent. In 2011, County Longford came after Donegal with an unemployment rate of 24.7 percent.

The analyses were conducted by Donegal County Council’s research and policy unit.

Fine Gael Cllr. Noel McBride, electoral area chairperson, said the analysis represented a serious amount of work, “giving us the real picture of what’s happening.”

“This is the type of information that is invaluable for those of us in public life,” Sinn Féin Cllr. Mick Quinn said.
