Donegal students are runners up in Engineers Ireland ‘Xperience Engineering’ competition

Donegal Students from St Riaghan’s NS, Glenties, Co Donegal have been named runners up for their entry, which focused on wind turbines, in this year’s Engineers Ireland Xperience Engineering Competition 2012. The finals took place in The Helix, DCU, Dublin 9.
Students from Cahir Boys NS (Tipperary) were named winners of the Junior category with students from John Scottus, Dublin taking the trophy for the prestigious title of the senior category. Both category winners received a laptop and trophy for their school.
Last December all registered primary schools were sent out a pack from Engineers Ireland highlighting the theme for this year’s competition which was ‘Technology for Life’. Over a four month period, participants worked on their projects which reflected engineering in their local community. Recurring themes include health focused projects and wind energy.
John Power, Director General of Engineers Ireland, said: “The Xperience Engineering project has a long history with schools around Ireland.
This is the 4th year of the competition and each year I’m delighted with the level of interest and enthusiasm as well as the high calibre of projects that are entered. Students who made it this far should be very proud of themselves. Congratulations on a job well done.”
The competition is divided into two categories, the first targeting 3rd-4th class and the second focusing on 5th-6th class. The top 15 projects from each category have been chosen to represent their school at the Xperience Engineering National Final. The winners of the Junior and Senior Categories each receive a trophy and a laptop for their school and a cheque for educational equipment. Highly commended entries in both categories will receive laptops for their school.
The ‘Xperience Engineering’ competition is just one of the activities run by the Engineers Ireland STEPS programme, designed to encourage students to explore the world of engineering and science, and inform them of the fantastic career opportunities in engineering. The STEPS programme is supported by Discover Science and Engineering, Ireland’s national science promotion programme managed by Science Foundation Ireland on behalf of the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation.
