Donegal football, and supporters, in the pink!

With Donegal GAA in the pink as the county footballers edge closer to potential glory in September, leading sports shops have been reporting a brisk trade in the sale of jerseys and other regalia, And top of the list are the new pink shirts, specially produced for GAA supporters.

“The pink jerseys have just walked out the door. We got seventy-two of them and they sold in one day,” Gareth Britton of All Sports in Donegal Town told the ‘Democrat’ yesterday.

“Fifty people are waiting for them and we have over 100 ordered for next week and they’ll likely be gone too. It’s just been crazy.”

The traditional Donegal jersey, currently being worn to such outstanding effect by Jim McGuinness’s men, is also being snapped up by fans keen to savour the moment. “It’s getting busy alright and we expect it to be busier again come next week and in the build-up to the quarter-finals,” said Gareth.

“We’ve also had plenty of phone calls from supporters making enquiries and orders on the internet,” added the All Sports proprietor who was one of the 34,696 G.A.A. fans who crammed into St. Tiernach’s Park for last Sunday’s Ulster Final.

The continuing phenomenal interest in Donegal regalia has been county-wide. “There’s been a big demand for the new pink shirts and for the ordinary jerseys too,” indicated Brian McCormick of McCormick Sports & Leisure on Letterkenny’s Main Street.

“We’re getting more in to help satisfy the demand. I’d say it will be clean mad altogether next week. We’ve been taking bookings and we’re definitely expecting a lot more interest in the coming days.”

The sports shop proprietor was also in Clones last weekend and came away suitably encouraged by the second half performance of the team. “It was brilliant - very impressive.

Jim McGuinness has got them believing in themselves and I don’t think they’re afraid of anybody at this stage,” said Brian.
