Two Donegal fisherman are safe and well after a trawler they were fishing on caught fire off the Waterford coast on Sunday morning.

The Kingfisher, a 40-foot herring trawler owned by Keith Doherty and Ryan McDonald, who are both from Greencastle, went ablaze around 7.30am about 10km off Dunmore East.

It is not known whether Mr Doherty and Mr McDonald were the two men on board at the time, as another man, whose name is not known, had been fishing for Mr McDonald in recent weeks.

As the flames took hold of the vessel, the crew abandoned ship in a life-raft.

They were picked up by a passing vessel, while both the Dunmore East RNLI Lifeboat and the Irish Coast Guard Rescue 117 Helicopter were tasked to the scene. The RNLI crew were not able to extinguish the flames and the trawler sank as the RNLI lifeboat was towing it back to harbour.

Seamus Bovaird, of Greencastle Fishermen’s Co-op, said everyone in Greencastle was very much relieved to learn that the fishermen were uninjured.
