Derry man jailed for Muff car-jacking

Court news from the Donegal Democrat.

Court news from the Donegal Democrat.

A homeless man, said to have been expelled from Derry by dissident republicans, has been jailed for his part in a terrifying car-jacking incident in Donegal.

Brendan Meehan, aged 21, of no fixed abode, was jailed for assault and hi-jacking a car in Muff two weekends ago.

His solicitor Frank Dorrian told Letterkenny District Court that Meehan’s life had been ‘extremely sad’ and he had ended up on the Donegal side of the border as a result of threats.

“He has been in and out of care for his entire life and, when he was forced out of Derry by elements there last weekend, he literally found himself in Muff as he had nowhere else to go,” said Mr Dorrian.

“He had no money and became involved in this incident.”

The court heard that during the weekend of the incident, a local man in Muff was forced to stop his car when Meehan appeared in the middle of the road.

The victim was forced out of his car and Meehan and two juveniles took the vehicle.

The car was later found crashed just outside Muff.

Gardai arrested Meehan and the two juveniles.

The youths were later handed back to social workers in Derry city.

Judge Paul Kelly sentenced Meehan to three months in prison for assault and four months in prison for hijacking the car.

The sentences are to run concurrently.
