Death of Erin Gallagher: School to open after funeral on Wednesday to offer support to students

The funeral of Erin Gallagher, the 13-year-old schoolgirl who warned friends on a social networking site she was going to kill herself will take place this Wednesday in Stranorlar. The school she attended, Finn Valley College, will offer professional counselling support to students on Wednesday, after the funeral.

On Monday afternoon Finn Valley College, where Erin Gallagher was a second year student, opened its doors to offer professional support to parents and what was described as “quite a few” parents used the service.

Erin Gallagher killed herself after alleging she had been bullied in an online discussion forum.

The death of Erin Gallagher is now being linked to cyber bullying and appeals for calm have been made.

Calls for the banning of the ask.fm website where Erin had posted messages, have been made. A dedicated facebook page called RIP Erin Gallagher in Erin’s memory had attracted 3,850 ‘likes’ by Monday evening.

Erin’s remains will be removed on Monday evening to her grand aunt’s home in Killygordon for waking.

On Wednesday, following her funeral mass at St. Mary’s Church in Stranorlar and burial in Castlefinn, Finn Valley College will open to students and professional support from HSE staff will be made available.

On Monday Erin’s sister, Shannon, posted a moving tribute to her young sister. Meanwhile facebook comments are offering support and sympathy to Erin’s mother Laura, her sister Shannon and to the Gallagher family.

Erin’s death comes just weeks after the death of another teenager in Dromahair, Co Leitrim. Ciara Pugsley took her life after she was bullied online.
