Death of Canon Padraig McShane, Donegal Town

The death has taken place of Canon Padraig McShane, retired Parish Priest of Tawnawilly, Donegal Town.

Fr. McShane, a native of Teelin, passed away on Monday at Donegal Community Hospital following illness. He was aged 87.

He had served as Parish Priest in Donegal Town for twelve years.

Requiem Mass was held in St Agatha’s Church, Clar on Thursday.

Fr Willie Peoples, PP, Tawnawilly shared his memories of Canon McShane.

“He was a very spiritual man who had a strong belief in taking time out each day for prayer.

“He was also a very interesting preacher, who always spoke in a very down to earth way.

“In addition, Fr. McShane was a very good liturgist and had a keen interest in the religious instruction in local schools.

“His care for the sick in the local hospital in Donegal town was always a priority with him too. He was very kind and sensitive to those who were elderly and infirm.

“He was very generous with his time: he was always about the parish and spent time with people.

“I’ve known him for about sixteen years and I found him to be a true gentleman to work with. He never pushed his authority at any time, he was always very gracious and kindly towards me.”
