Curragh racing in Gaoth Dobhair

A very enjoyable curragh event which was organised by Cumann na gCurach in Gaoth Dobhair took place at Magheragallon Pier on Sunday. Glorious sunshine brought a large number of spectators to the event. There has always been a strong tradition of curragh racing in the parish, but it declined during the late fifties and it has now been revived again by Cumann na gCurach. Exactly fifty years ago three young Gola Island men, brothers, Mickey and Hugh Roarty along with Éamonn Diver, won the All Irela

The winners of the main race were Declan Ferry, Brigid Marie Solan and James McGonagle. Second was a team of Annie Duffy, Trevor Mitchell and Celene McGee, and third was a team consisting of Joanne Boyle, Anne Curran and Noreen Rodgers.

The man/woman competition was won by Joanne Boyle and Samus Ferry, second came James and Fiona McGonagle and third came William Boyle and Brd Solan.

The prizes were kindly sponsored by Teach Shein ig, Middletown, Derrybeg and the prizes were presented by Cliona Barr of Teach Shein ig.
