The Cross Border search all along the River Foyle which has been ongoing since last Thursday has been stepped up following reports that another person had plunged from Foyle Bridge.

The PSNI in Derry confirmed yesterday morning that officers were “attending” a new report of a body in the water in the River Foyle.

A massive cross border operation involving Foyle Search and Rescue and the Irish Coast Guard, which was due to resume for missing Dublin teenager Kieran McKeon (18), was stepped up following the report of another incident.

An Irish coastguard helicopter was tasked to the scene, a spokesperson at Bangor coastguard station confirmed. He said that air assistance was requested after it was reported that a male may have plunged from Foyle Bridge shortly after 7.30am.

Meanwhile, the uncle of Kieran McKeon has visited Derry to thank those involved in the search for his nephew. Kieran went missing along with fellow Dubliner Alexandra O’Brien (21), whose body was recovered from the river on Thursday evening.

Craig Smyth of Foyle Search and Rescue, said: “Kieran’s uncle Harry came up to say thanks to everyone involved for their best efforts. He said the family very much appreciated everything we were doing.”

FSR volunteers have been scouring the length and breadth of the river since last Thursday. “We have around 60 volunteers and we’ve had people looking for any sight of Kieran all weekend,” Mr Smyth added.

During the cross border air, sea and land search boats and jet skis have been deployed to scour a stretch of the river Foyle from Newbuildings to Culmore Point. Greencastle lifeboat crews searched the northern end of the lough and river up as far as Culmore Point while the coastguard helicopter from Sligo provided aerial assistance..

Kieran had travelled to Derry with Alexandra on Wednesday after they left the St John of God hospital in Stillorgan, Dublin. Alexandra’s body was found in the River Foyle on Thursday evening during a search operation launched after some of her belongings were found at the Foyle Bridge earlier that day.
