Court cancelled due to Judge shortage

A recent specially planned sitting of Buncrana Circuit Court was cancelled due to a lack of judges being available, it has been learned.

Speaking at Letterkenny Circuit Court on Tuesday, Judge John O’Hagan said he had applied for a special sitting of the court to take place a number of weeks ago to help clear a backlog of civil cases.

The sitting was listed as assigned but was later cancelled.

“There simply was not enough Judges available,” he explained.

Speaking at the start of a three week sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court he said he had planned to devote all that time dealing with criminal matters to help “knock a hole” in the court list but he would now do two weeks of criminal and one week of civil cases.

He said there was “no word” on any new Judge appointments and added it was not just an issue for the Northern Circuit but was nationwide in every court area.
