Councillors clash on St Patrick’s Day travel trips
Two councillors have clashed over the prospect of sending a delegation from Donegal County Council to the USA for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in March.
The fall-out comes ahead of today’s monthly council meeting at which the council trip to the US is expected to be discussed.
Mayor Frank McBrearty was among those who voted against sending then-Mayor Brendan Byrne to the USA in 2010. Yesterday, Mayor McBrearty said that if the situation was to arise again, he would vote against sending Cllr. Byrne anywhere. “I would vote against sending Cllr. Byrne to America or anywhere else after what he did at the budget meeting (when Cllr. Byrne was Mayor). I wouldn’t do the same to any other Mayor,” he said.
However, Cllr. Byrne has accused Cllr, McBrearty of deflecting from the real issue.
“The reality is that the council in 2010 took a democratic decision not to send the Mayor to America on economic grounds. Cllr. McBrearty may wish to put up a smoke screen now that he is intending to get the council to pay for his third trip to America inside a four-month period,” Cllr. Byrne said.
