Council seeks Blue Flag status for 12 beaches

Donegal County Council has submitted Blue Flag Beach applications for 12 beaches for the 2012 Blue Flag season.

In response to a question submitted for the council’s January meeting by Fianna Fáil Cllr. Liam Blaney, Joe Peoples, council’s acting director of water and environment, said the council submitted the applications in time to meet the Dec. 23rd, 2011, deadline.

The council made applications for beaches at Culdaff, Shroove, Lisfannon, Magherawarden (Portsalon), Marblehill, Killahoey, Downings, Carrickfinn, Narin, Fintra, Murvagh and Rossnowlagh, Mr. Peoples said.

He said Bundoran Town Council has applied for Blue Flag status for Bundoran Beach.

The council has also carried out an initial assessment of a number of other beaches in the county in terms of their suitability for Blue Flag status in the future, Mr. Peoples said. He said a new application for Blue Flag status requires beaches to go through a pilot Blue Flag scheme, in which the beach will be inspected by An Taisce for suitability with a view to the beach applying for and being awarded the status in future years.

Mr. Peoples said the council’s water and environment strategic policy committee is currently considering policy for submitting other locations for Blue Flag status, determining the resources needed to achieve the award and to retain awards for beaches where applications have been successful.
