Council welcomes consideration of same-sex marriage

Donegal County Council yesterday welcomed consideration of same-sex marriage by the government’s proposed Constitutional Convention.

The measure was proposed at Monday’s September meeting of Donegal County Council by Fine Gael as an amendment to a motion by independent Cllr. John Campbell, who had brought forward a motion calling on the council to support the same rights and entitlements to civil marriages for all citizens of Donegal, regardless of race, religion or sexuality”.

Instead, the Fine Gael motion welcomed consideration of the issue at the convention and said the local authority awaits the debate of its recommendations by the Oireachtas.

“It further welcomes the assurances by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, TD, that the government will give a public response, through the Oireachtas, to each recommendation from the convention within four months,” the amendment stated.

Cllr. Campbell said today that while he was disappointed his motion did not pass, he said he felt the substantive issue of the motion remained the same.

“For it to be rejected, it would have had to be voted down and it wasn’t,” Cllr. Campbell said.

Fianna Fáil had proposed an amendment stating the council supported the existing constitutional rights to civil marriages, but Cllr. Campbell said that wasn’t enough.

“This is a children’s rights, a child protection issue and civil partnership wouldn’t provide that cover,” he said. “Whether people agree with same-sex marriage or not, same-sex families exist and they have children and it’s these children who suffer under the present system.”
