Council to review Ballyshannon housing decision

Donegal County Council is to review the process around the allocation of a house to a Traveller family in Ballyshannon that has caused concern among residents.
The move follows the challenging of the decision by Ballyshannon councillor Barry O’Neill, who told the January meeting of the council that the allocation was a planning issue.
He said the allocation of social housing in a rural area is not provided for in the county development plan. The Fine Gael councillor said social housing in a rural area is against national and county-wide policy.
Cllr. O’Neill said local residents will have to go to court because the council “failed them and failed them miserably.”
But county manager Seamus Neely stood over the decision saying it was not inconsistent with the county development plan. He said the council can review the process and what has happened in relation to the purchase of the property.
