DONEGAL County Council has made the shortlist in a number of categories in the Excellence in Local Government Awards. The local authority’s far-reaching Donegal Gathering initiative has been shortlisted in the ‘Supporting Tourism’ category.

Its ‘One Donegal Cultural Diversity Month’ has made the ‘Festival of the Year’ shortlist with the Donegal Fire Service in the running for the ‘Outstanding Customer Service’ accolade for its response to the raging gorse fires in May 2011.

The local authority is up against other events such as the Tall Ships in Waterford and services such as Dublin City Council’s home grants scheme.

The awards are being run by Chambers Ireland in association with the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government.

Environment Minister, Phil Hogan, said: “The work carried out by local authorities plays a key part in the development of both the local economy and the local community. The strength of applications this year is to be commended and highlights the rich and diverse initiatives taking place in communities across the country.”

The winners in 17 categories will be announced on November 8 at the Burlington Hotel Dublin.

Other gongs up for grabs are Supporting Active Communities; Sports Development and Local Authority Economic Efficiencies. Awards will also be presented to the City/County Council of the Year and the Town/Borough Council of the Year.
