The members of Bundoran Town Council made a presentation to Kevin Murray on Tuesday to mark his achievement in winning an All-Ireland Championship in swimming.

At Tuesday’s monthly meeting of the council, members heard that he raced the 100m front crawl event in just 53 seconds, taking the All-Ireland U-16 title.

Cllr. Florence Doherty (Ind) said she was well aware of “the both commitment the parents and the child that would have given to get to that level and the amount of training that Kevin would have done. “He finished in a great time, it’s near Olympic standard. He is a Bundoran Champion, a Donegal Champion and an All-Ireland Champion and it’s possible that we will see him in the Olympics one day.”

Cllr. Elizabeth McIntyre (FF) also praised the young champion, as well as “the whole Murray family that encouraged him” for their commitment and his achievement. “When we’re turning over for an extra sleep, swimmers like Kevin aree off to get half a day’s training done.”

Cllr. Sean McEniff (FF) noted that the Murray family have a great tradition of sporting achievement. “Kevin’s grandfather achieved a huge amount on the football field. He played in all four provinces and should have received an All Ireland medal.

Cllr. Mick McMahon added that Kevin’s father John had been on a Bundoran champion team as well.
