Could Jim be winning again?

The Donegal Person of the Year 2012 will be announced today and all the smart money is betting that Donegal coach Jim McGuinness will emerge the winner.

The Donegal Association, which bestows this highly coveted annual award, is notorious for playing its cards close to its chest. The group doesn’t even release a list of nominees.

All that Chairperson Sorcha Ní Dhomhnaill would say this week was: “We’ve had a huge interest this year, having received a significant number of nominations from the public.”

The Donegal Person of the Year 2011 was, for the first time in the award’s history, given two two individuals - New Zealand based entrepreneur Hugh Green, who sadly passed away during the year, and long distance swimmer Anne Marie Ward.

Other names mooted as possible winners for 2012 are golfer Paul McGinley, Sr Magdalene of the Solas Cancer Support Service in Donegal Town, and singers Moya and Enya Brennan.

The winner will be inaugurated at the Annual Gala Ball on Saturday, February 23 in the Regency Hotel, Dublin.
