Communities left in shock over deaths of 11 and 18 year olds

THree communities in Donegal are in shock following the tragic loss of two young lives in the space of three days. Eleven-year-old Jamie Toner from Churchill died on Saturday following an accident involving a tractor at a relative’s farm in Kerrykeel.
On Sunday 18-year-old Shane Patton from Drumkeen was laid to rest in the village. He died when the car he was driving was involved in a collision with another vehicle at Callan on the N13 between Letterkenny and Ballybofey - close to his home. He was taken to Letterkenny General Hospital following the collision last Wednesday night and passed away on Thursday afternoon.
Shane was the son of Martin and Julie Patton, Cloghroe. Hundreds of people attended the Requiem Mass at St. Patrick’s Church in Drumkeen. Shane is also survived by his brother Jason and sister Dina.
An investigation has been launched by the Health and Safety Authority into how Jamie Toner died.
It is understood the accident took place when the tractor was cutting sillage. Jamie was rushed to Letterkenny General Hospital but died later.
The death has shocked both the communities of Churchill and Kerrykeel.
Jamie was the son of Jimmy and Roísín Toner of Crockraw, Churchill and the younger brother of Lynn. He had been a student at Stramore National School in Glendowan.
Churchill parish priest Fr. Michael McKeever said the community was numb following the tragedy. “The community is doing their best to help them in any way they can but is a very difficult time for all. All we can do is pray for Roísín and Lynn at this time,” he said.
Jamie’s remains were removed from Letterkenny General Hospital yesterday afternoon and brought to his home.
Requiem Mass for Jamie is in St Colmcille’s Church, Glendowan at 1pm on Wednesday, followed by burial in Templedouglas Cemetery.
