Coleman subjected to on-line abuse
Donegal’s Republic of Ireland international Seamus Coleman was subjected to anti-Irish abuse on Twitter after Everton fans blamed him for the team’s defeat at the weekend.
The Killybegs man conceded a late penalty that led to the team’s defeat against Reading on Saturday.
The fullback was targeted by offensive comments, some of them anti-Irish, on the social media site following the match.
The 24-year-old former Sligo Rovers player put in a man-of-the match performance for Ireland during the 1-0 defeat by Greece on Wednesday.
Everton has criticised the comments and said the club would continue to stamp every form of discrimination.
Club spokesman Darren Griffiths said: “We 100 per cent abhor every single one of these comments made by mindless individuals who have shown no respect for the strong Irish links Everton has with all its Irish supporters.
“As a football club we have enjoyed a strong relationship with Irish players throughout the years and we enjoy a great support throughout the country.
“Unfortunately we live in an age where social media allows these faceless individuals the opportunity to abuse people like this as and when they feel like it,” he said.
