Donegal County councillors have called for special status to be given to border counties and for covert cameras to be set up at the border in the wake of the murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe in Louth on Friday night.

Det Garda Donohoe died after being shot by an armed gang who carried out a raid at a Co. Louth credit union.

Councillors held a one minute silence in memory of the murdered garda at the January meeting of the Donegal County Council.

Calls were also made for meetings with the justice minister and the Garda Commissioner to discuss security in the county following recent a series of robberies and break-ins, closures to garda stations and cuts in garda numbers.

Councillors also called for garda recruitment to begin and expressed concern that there are not enough gardaí on the ground.

Comments by justice minister Alan Shatter that the challenges in Donegal are no greater than any other part of the county were also criticised.
