Call for civil servant’s salaries to be published
A member of Bundoran Town Council has called for all the pay scales in the civil service to be made public.
Cllr. Florence Doherty (Ind) proposed a motion to that effect at Tuesday’s monthly council meeting. The motion was not seconded however.
After the meeting, she said: “You always hear about how much people get deducted - that they’ve lost €3,000, they’ve lost €5,000, they’ve lost €30,000 from their salaries - but you never hear what the salary is.
“I want that information put out into the public domain so that the people of Ireland can decide whether the civil service are being paid appropriately - maybe not enough, maybe they should get more, whether they are being overpaid, or whether they can sustain a reduction in their salaries to help, in the national interest. We’ve all got to put our shoulders to the wheel now because Ireland is in trouble. And the people who are well off and well paid should help out a lot.
“But, the thing is, we can’t judge because we don’t know what they’re getting. I have no idea what a civil servant wages are – clerical stage I, stage II, etc - so I can’t say they should be penalised more than, say, the people in the private sector, because I don’t know what they are getting. I want to know so that I can compare and make a value judgement.”
