Bundoran Mayor slams fracking CEO
Bundoran Town Mayor Mick McMahon has berated the CEO of a company licensed to carry out ‘fracking’ in the Lough Allen basin for his “contemptuous attitude” towards the people of the North West.
Bundoran Town Council recently passed a motion by unanimous consent to ban the controversial practice of ‘fracking’ or hydraulic fracturing in the next Development Plan for Bundoran Town and Environs.
Donegal County Council has also agreed to put a ban in the next County Development Plan.
The process uses highly pressurised water jets to blast apart rocks in order to extract natural gas. Many companies use chemical additives as well as water in the practice.
A number of concerns have been expressed at public meetings across the north west about the potential effects on public water supplies, public health, the environment and tourism.
Richard Moorman, CEO of Tamboran Resources, told media this week that the company intends to go ahead with their plans, which include testing areas near and in Bundoran.
Cllr. McMahon told the Democrat: “I think Richard Moorman’s attitude to the people of this country and this area has been very derogatory.
His attitude seems to be that he will do as he likes irrespective of how the people who live here feel about it.
“His tactics are not acceptable. We are all very well aware of the way the oil companies treated the people of Rossport and this smacks of a similar contempt for the local population.”
