Brother Edward laid to rest in Ards

The late Brother Edward Dunne OFM CAP, 1930-2012, was laid to rest at Ards Friary on New Year’s Eve.
The song “If I were a rich man” and its catchy lilt “Yubby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dum.…” was the signature tune that greeted all to the holy shop at Ards but on the last day of the last month of 2012 the man behind that joyful voice, Brother Edward was laid to rest in his beloved Ards.
On New Year’s Eve members of the Capuchin Order were joined by Bishop Philip Boyce and representing clergy from the Raphoe Diocese along with members of Brother Edward’s family, including, Leo, Tony, Henry and local people from all ove r Donegal to celebrate Brother Edward’s life.
Fr. Dermot Lynch (Cork) gave a beautiful insight into this joyful brother.
Edward was the eldest boy born into the Dunne family of six in 1930 in Dublin.
He worked as salesman and buyer for the leading Dublin drapers, Galligans, which at the time on the order books had the contract for the habits for the Capuchin order in Ireland.
Fr. Dermot, then Dermot Lynch, was working for Blarney Woolen Mills when he first saw Edward Dunne at his busy best buying material for the drapers in Dublin to make habits for the Capuchin Order. At 22 years of age and with great prospects with Galligans, the man of the cloth decided to change his path and join the order himself. Br Edward sold the idea of the Capuchin vocation to Dermot Lynch who in turn also joined the Capuchin Order.
Br. Edward’s joyful disposition has greeted visitors to Capuchin Houses all over Ireland and Zambia but mostly at Ard Mhuire in Ards. The open door of welcome with song was a signature of Brother Edward all his life. His song “If I were a rich man” had his wishes answered of sorts as he reached the Diamond Anniversary to the Order in his final year.
Brother Edward was laid to rest on the very same date he was born, 82 years to the day on New Year’s Eve. Fr. Sylvester the Guardian in Ards expressed sympathy to Br Edwards’s family members, his brothers Leo, Tony and Henry and prayed for his predeceased sisters Kathleen and Beitris.
He thanked St Eunan’s Nursing Home, Letterkenny for the care of Brother Edward in his final years. He also thanked the staff and the community for preparing Ards for Brother Edward’s final journey home.
