Bringing it all back home - artefacts to be returned to Ballyshannon

The organisers of the Ballyshannon 400 celebrations got a wonderful boost this week, with news that many historical artefacts are to be returned to the town.
The official week long commemoration of the founding of one of Ireland’s oldest towns takes place August 5-11.
However, a range of activities will also run throughout the year.
One of these, Town Clerk Mary Daly told the monthly Council meeting on Tuesday night, will be a month long exhibition of historical documents.
“Many of these items have been housed in the County Archive because there was no suitable location in the town where they could be securely displayed,” Ms Daly said.
“Now, with the new Ballyshannon & District Museum setting up home at Slevin’s and the shop providing secure display cases, the archivist has agreed to return the Town Council’s materials to us.”
These include hand-written Minute Books from across the centuries, press cuttings and a fascinating array of memorabilia.
The council has even applied to get the original Town Charter.
“We don’t know whether that will be possible or not,” Ms Daly explained.
“Apparently it very rarely happens but we’re hopeful.
“We should at least be able to get a copy of it, which would be a great thing to have.”
Mayor Phonsie Travers said the exhibition would be a tremendous boost to the Ballyshannon 400 celebrations, a sentiment that was warmly echoed by all the councillors at the meeting.
