Body of woman recovered from cliffs
The body of a middle-aged woman has been recovered from cliffs at The Loop, near Ards Friary, Creeslough.
Garda Supt. Eugene McGovern told the Democrat that gardaí in Letterkenny received a report of a missing person at 4.55pm on Thursday. A full-scale search operation was launched following enquiries in the Ards Friary area.
Gardaí and emergency services were assisted by the Coast Guard, volunteers from Donegal Mountain Rescue Team (DMRT) and staff from Ards Friary. The search operation was co-ordinated by Malin Head Coast Guard and, at 6.50pm, the Coast Guard Helicopter was sent to the scene.
“Conditions were difficult, as it was starting to get stormy and there was some question as to whether the helicopter would be able to respond. Also, we were operating in the hours of darkness,” Supt. McGovern said.
Brian Murray of DMRT said: “A Northern SARDA Dog search unit was attached to our team. Buddy the search dog along, with his handler Pete Brown and assisted by trainee handler Garett Wilson, found a female on the shore rocks on steep ground whose vital signs were inconsistent with life.
“Rescue 118 Coastguard Helicopter had a difficult time to drop the winch man onto the scene. DMRT assisted the winch man in the extraction and the casualty was flown to Sligo hospital.
“We wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the family.”
Supt. McGovern praised all involved for the efficiency of the search. “I have to thank everyone and acknowledge the excellent work they did in locating and recovering the body by 9.02pm.That’s very quickly, given the conditions they were operating in.”
