Ballyshannon's bog babes

Two ladies from Ballyshannon and one from Belleek have braved the cold, murky waters of a bog to be crowned Northern Ireland Bog Snorkelling Champions (Relay).

Fiona Meehan (14), her mum Sarah and Fiona's friend Danicka Maguire (15) won the competition at Peatlands Park, near Dungannon, on Sunday.

The event is organised by the Northland Ireland Environment Agency as part International Bog Day.

Fiona, daughter of Ballyshannon Town Councillor John Meehan and a student at Colaiste Colmcille took part in the relay last year along with Danicka, who lives in Belleek and is a student at St. Mary's High School. They joined up with another girl from Enniskillen and the trio placed second in the relay.

Competitors have to swim two lengths of a 60 yard long bog drain with only a snorkel, goggles and fins to help them and they can only dog paddle.

One local commented: "Our bog babes were always going to be 'turf to beat'."
