Ballyshannon woman dies in road accident
Eithne Gallagher, of Donegal town and Ballyshannon, who died following a collision near Cliffoney yesterday.
A Ballyshannon woman, aged 82, died in a road accident yesterday at Creevykeel, near Cliffoney, Co. Sligo.
She was a passenger in a car driven by her husband, a former Ulster and Donegal GAA star.
He was being treated last night at Sligo General Hospital for injuries received in the two-vehicle collision.
The woman who died at the scene was Eithne Gallagher (pictured), a native of Donegal town, who lived with her husband Jim, in Coolcholly, Ballyshannon.
The driver of a pick-up truck which was also in the accident on the N15 at 1.30 p.m. was treated for shock in hospital.
Gardai said both vehicles were facing towards Bundoran on the main Sligo-Donegal Road. They believe the truck was parked on the left of a straight road at the end of a double white line when the car collided with its rear.
Emergency services had to use cutting equipment to free the car’s occupants.
The road at Creevykeel was closed for several hours on Wednesday as gardaí carried out a technical examination and local diversions were in operation. The road was due to re-open last evening.
Mr Gallagher, nicknamed “The Natch”, was a noted footballer who represented Ulster in the Railway Cup and captained Donegal when the county won its first major trophy, the Dr Lagan Cup, in 1952.
A close family friend said: “They did everything together. They were very close and frequently used to travel out from Ballyshannon to Mass five miles away at Rossnowlagh. Deepest sympathy is extended to the Gallagher family on their tragic loss.
