As garda forensic investigations continue into the cause of the blaze at a Ballyshannon house allocated to a Traveller family, the Democrat can reveal that five formal complaints have been made to gardaí about anti-Traveller comments.

Gardaí confirmed yesterday that two complaints were filed in Letterkenny in the last week of January and three further complaints were filed in Ballyshannon last week. The complaints were made under the Probition of Incitement to Hatred Act, 1986 and relate to three people: Cllr Sean McEniff (FF), Ballyshannon Town Cllr Eugene Dolan and broadcaster/columnist Frank Galligan.

Dr Karin White, DCC Good Relations Officer, said that 32 complaints had been made to the council’s Racist and Sectarian Incident Reporting Scheme since January 17, the date the controversy began.
